If you know me, then you know how obsessed I am with music videos. Really obsessed. Like, when people listen to music on airplanes, I’m that person watching videos. I’m the weirdo that buys them from itunes. Yes, really.
I love music, you see, and seeing it visually represented can really make or break a song for me. I’ve fallen in love with certain artists or bands because of their videos – artists I wouldn’t have bat an eye at just listening to normally. There’s just something so magical about listening to your favorite song and seeing it come alive as the artist intended. I’ve experienced absolute and utter euphoria, longing, inspiration, tears and heartbreak in just a matter of minutes. I just freakin’ love them.
Since it was really difficult to narrow down my top choices to just a few, I might actually make this a series of sorts. For now, though, enjoy my top twenty (in no particular order):
1. Daft Punk – One More Time
Absolutely stunning and perfect. If you haven’t already, please do yourself a favor and watch Interstellar 5555.
2. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Don’t Come Around Here No More
Besides being an overall great song, this one features a cool Alice in Wonderland type adventure place. You can never go wrong with a theme like that. It’s just really, really neat.
3. Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce – Telephone
It was incredibly difficult to decide upon my favorite Lady Gaga video because I’m a huge fan of pretty much all of them. After much deliberation, I narrowed it down to “Telephone” (and not only because it features the Pussy Wagon) but because I feel it truly embodies the perfection and epitome of what Gaga is. This is her in her prime. Confession – I once purchased internet for $15 at a hostel in San Francisco just so I could watch it as soon as it was released.
4. Tool – Schism
I was mesmerized and intrigued the first time I saw this video back in the day on MTV and it subsequently acted as the catalyst for exploring the band further. It’s creepy but gorgeous: I love you, Adam Jones.
5. Bjork – All is Full of Love
I’m a sucker for anything robot. I’m a sucker for anything Bjork. The two together? Love at first sight/listen. Seriously – the song is beautifully surreal and the video is no exception. And romantic. Sigh.
6. Michael Jackson – Thriller
I mean, duh. There isn’t anything I can say that hasn’t already been said about this video a hundred times, but we all know it’s the best one in the world.
7. Nine Inch Nails – Closer
Choosing my favorite Nine Inch Nail video was akin to a Sophie’s choice unlike any other artist I’ve ever loved (he’s my fave) but ultimately I went with Mark Romanek’s “Closer” (though “Deep” and “The Perfect Drug” were a close second). Yes, Trent is super hot and gorgeous in this. Yes, it’s uber creepy. But it’s really unique and classic Trent Reznor aesthetic. Plus it has a vintage medical illustration vibe, so you know I’m on board. Perfectly horrific and ah-mah-zing.
8. Ok Go – This Too Shall Pass
Ok Go is known for their fantastic music videos (usually shot all in one take) and this one was always my favorite. It’s like a giant Mouse Trap! So much fun.
9. Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream
I fell in love with this band the very first second I saw the video. It made me cry at the time, not because it was so pretty, but because it woke up that hungry wanderlust beast I kept hidden right below the surface. So, so beautiful – I just absolutely love this.
10. Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight
There’s only one word that can accurately depict this video: magic. It’s pure, unadulterated delicious magic. The song, the visual explosions. Everything.
11. Florence + The Machine – Spectrum
David LaChapelle’s video is just as exquisite as the song itself. Anything with ballerinas and I’m in (I used to be a serious dancer so it’s my weakness). Florence is the bees knees and you know it. Simply illuminating.
12. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll
Two words: dancing werewolf. Do you really need anything else? No.
13. The Darkness – I Believe In a Thing Called Love
Everyone loves this song and video. Everyone. If you don’t, you’re a weirdo who hates fun and I don’t like you. This video literally has everything you’ve ever wanted in a video (if you’re me).
14. Britney Spears – You Drive Me Crazy
I remember practicing for hours in front of a mirror, stopping and rewinding this video over and over so I could perfect all the dance moves (the same could be said of all her videos, really) but this one stood out because it was when she ‘grew up’. It was so badass at the time, and it totally still is. I love Madonna and Janet, but Britney is my favorite dancer of all time. (MJ doesn’t count, because he invented dancing).
15. Johnny Cash – Hurt
Sob. I can hardly say anything about this, other than it’s the most beautiful and depressing video I’ve ever seen. Cash took a total NIN classic and transformed it into something even more (dare I say it) magnificent. I literally die and sob every time I see this. You will too, if you’re human. Also, sidenote – the single biggest thing you could do to annoy me is to claim that Trent covered this. Don’t. Ever. Do. That. Ever.
16. Madonna – Human Nature
Leather, latex and bondage – what’s not to like from the queen bee herself? All her videos are superb, but this one is dynamite.
17. Marina and the Diamonds – Oh No!
Marina is absolutely adorable and super inspiring – nothing empowers you through a devastating breakup like one of her heartbreaker anthems. This video is colorful, fun and the song is super catchy.
18. Fatboy Slim – Weapon of Choice
Christopher Walken dances. That is all.
19. Rob Zombie – Living Dead Girl
Rob Zombie at his finest.
20. Andre 3000 – Hey Ya!
I absolutely love Outkast, but when Andre and Big Boi each recorded separate albums, I was instantly obsessed with this song and its video. It boasts a super fun beatlemania jive and instills really good feelings and cheer. Yes, I said cheer. This video makes you want to say those kinds of words.
I hope you enjoyed my top twenty favorite videos! What are some of yours?
